DreamForge-Games Price Increase.

We started down the road to manufacturing plastic kits in 2012, a lot has happened since then. I have seen shipping prices nearly double, WGF has ceased to be our distributor and we have taken over that aspect of operations. We now purchase our kits from WGF China directly.
We recently place two restock orders to bring our stock levels back on par, the shipping costs have been an eye opener. In many cases shipping from China to the US was more than the actual cost to manufacture a kit. Some kits needed to be brought in line with their cost of production. This price increase was as minimal as we could make it most items will see an increase of 5% to 8% with some more drastic adjustments to kits that were selling into distribution at a lower than delivered cost to us.
To maintain the health of DreamForge-Games it has become clear that we will need to implement a price increase, effective February 15th2016

Interview With Dale Gifford (SaltCon)


SaltCon has become a regular event for many gamers and game developers, not only along the Wasatch Front, or even the Rocky Mountain area. People are traveling to SaltCon from across the United States and from other countries. They are coming because of the work that has been put into SaltCon, making it one of the top 10 tabletop gaming conventions in the country.

The work the founding members of SaltCon have done since it began in 2008 shows their dedication and love for what they are doing, not only as convention owners, but as enthusiasts for the hobby as players and developers.

Dale Gifford is one of the founding members of SaltCon and I was able to discuss with him the journey SaltCon has taken.

Guild Master Gaming (GMG): What sparked the concept of SaltCon and what was the driving force that got it started?

Dale Gifford (DG): It was in a BGDG (Board Game Designers' Guild) meeting that someone mentioned that the local game day, A Gathering of Strangers (AGoS), was not going to happen. People did not like that idea and so Steve Poelzing said he would run it instead and asked who wanted to help. David Bailey, Phil Kilcrease and myself offered to help. After running the event we decided that we liked the experience and wanted to do it again. The owner of A Gathering of Strangers didn't want to sell so we decided to create our own event and offset from AGoS by about 6 months. The four of us sat in a restaurant late one night and came up with a name, the ion award etc... Thus SaltCON was born.

2015
GMG: When you first started SaltCon what was your vision of where you wanted to take your event?

DG: We just wanted to run an event so that people could play games. The AGoS was the only event back then. After a few years we decided that we wanted to be a destination convention that people from all across the country would attend.

GMG: Over the 11 years what was one of your biggest achievements with SaltCon?

DG: Not quitting. It is a huge amount of work and always stressful. In 2014 we could not find a venue and we almost canceled the show. Another event cancelled and a spot opened at the Davis Conference Center and we have been there ever since.
GMG: Have there been any "left turns" that occurred for better or worse that you didn't have planned for?

DG: In 2013 we had two of the four owners move out of state and then we only had two of us left to run everything. At that time the owners were Steven Poelzing, Dave Bailey, Sean MacDonald and myself. We had bought out Phil Kilcrease the year before so that he could focus on his 5th Street Games production company. Sean and I were the only two left standing. It was good and bad. We found Dan Naylor wanted to do more that year and so he became more involved, but the other people who had expressed interest all fell through. Other than that we have not had any huge issues. We try different things and some work and some do not, but it doesn't really affect much.

GMG: Is there something you would like to add to the convention? If so, what?

DG: At this point in time there is nothing I am looking to add or want to add. We are out of space. Now I am looking to see if anything isn't working well and if we should cut it.

GMG: What plans can you share about the future of SaltCon?

DG: We have no plans except to keep things going. We are essentially at our max attendance for the venue, so will shop out all the other venues to see if any make sense. We have added two events and if things go well, we may look at adding another event.

2018
There is a lot going on at SaltCon every year. Now with the additional events taking place, gamers and developers have more time to get together. WIP: Minefields For Team Yankee

   As I really don't like the measure from the counter sort of thing that Team Yankee is using, I thought I would make some pieces that actually model the area of the minefield. It may make it easier for my opponent to avoid blundering into the field, but I think it will look nicer.

   Anyway, I started with CDs as they are pretty much exactly the right diameter (4"/10cm across).


   First step: prime them. I used a rattle can of ultra flat dark forest green I had handy. Same thing I use for my Soviet vehicle base, actually. That bit of sheen is because I didn't spray it very heavily and there's a bit of plastic showing.


   Next, I put little dots of PVA glue all over, and some of my preferred dirt, which is brown fine ballast. Each dirt mound will indicate a hastily emplaced mine. I added some bits of grass tuft (Army Painter Wilderness) and flowers (also Army Painter).

   Aaaand... that's all so far. I am leaving town for a few days this afternoon so the rest will have to wait until I return. Actually, as this posts, I am in Las Vegas, waiting for my plane to go home. But I scheduled it to post while I was away, being a clever boy that wants to entertain his friends whilst away.

Grav-StuG Kickstarter Temporarily Postponed……


Unfortunately, I need to temporarily postpone the Kickstarter. A price quote for packaging and distribution services from china to the backers did not come back in time. It would be irresponsible with me to proceed without this aspect pinned down.

I will try to get a firm date once the quote comes in, with Chinese New Year, fast approaching I do not see that happening for at least a month. (most contacts will be unavailable for the month of February)

I will update you when I know more, thank you for your understanding.

What's On My Miniatures Painting Workbench This Week (4/25/19)

I've been slowly working my miniatures' mountain to a small hill and now it's a speed bump. I have 17 miniatures left to paint. [1]

Those 8 unprimed minis are the last of the unprimed in my inventory. The rest are works-in-progress or waiting for me to get to it.

That nasty looking bugger with the eyes... he's been a curse and a pleasure. I finally have the fleshy bits looking like I want. I've left the upper half gloss varnished, so I can work on the tentacles and not worry about ruining the completed paint job. The claws serve as nice places to brace against, so I'll do them last.

Those painted figures are waiting to be varnished and based.

     

[1] I do have some "projects"/"dioramas" that are sitting on the shelf. One is for a GaryCon diorama using the solar mini from 2018. One is a King Arthur diorama for the PrincessWife. But I don't count those... that's my story and I'm sticking to it! *grin*
